10:18 ? : We are often asked where the designation 10:18 (also written as 10/18 or described as Ten Eighteen) comes from. It is simply derived from the old British Standard sieve size measurements on which sands were graded. A "ten" was 10 holes per square inch whilst "18" was a slightly smaller size being 18 holes to the inch. The sizes approximate to the metric equivalent of 1.7mm and 0.85mm
